不定代词something在英语中的用法非常灵活。当你想描述一种不知名的东西时，可以打手势，再加上一句“something like that”（有点像那个）就行了。这不单是初学英语者常用something like that，甚至英美人士也不时使用，比如：与外国朋友闲谈时，说起中国特有的乐器琵琶（pipa），不知如何形容它，这时你可先提出他们熟悉的吉他（guitar），然后再说something like that。当然，要区别起来，琵琶与吉他还是大有不同的。
当你送礼物给别人时，为了表示谦虚，说上一句“This is a small something for you.”（这是点小意思。）便足够了。接受别人的礼物时，则可以说“It's really something.”（真不错。）表示欣赏和谢意。
当你有话要对别人讲时，可说“I've got something to tell you.”（我有话要对你说。）；当赞美别人讲话讲得好、有内容时，除了可用well said 表示以外，“You've got something there.”（你说得真好。）也是常用语。
当你想表达某种模糊的概念，推测别人的职业或不敢肯定别人的身份时，something 一词也大有用处。例如：
I caught the twelve something train. 我赶上了12点几分的火车。
It must be something like seven o'clock. 该是7点左右了吧。
He is a wool merchant or something. 他是个羊毛商之类的人。
He is a teacher or something. 他大概是位老师。
